Our History
How we got our start ...
Andra and Dan Spurr came to Montana in 1999 because their seven-year-old son Steve wanted to go camping and “cook meat on a fire.” So that’s what they did on vacation in Yellowstone National Park. On a whim they bought a log cabin not far from Bridger Bowl in Bozeman, and soon decided to make Montana home.
It wasn’t long before Andra, who had had beautiful perennial gardens in her home state of Rhode Island, and was having difficulty adjusting to growing conditions here, declared that “someone ought to start a gardening magazine” for Rocky Mountain gardeners. When no one else raised their hands, Andra and Dan decided to start such a magazine themselves. With advertising and editorial careers in magazine publishing they launched Zone 4 in 2009.
